Taliban want lady councillors sacked

PESHAWAR: Threatening letters were issued to the district government departments in the provincial metropolis to sack female councillors or their offices would be bombed, a source told The News.

A source disclosed here on Thursday that the threatening letters were issued to the Town-IV office on the Kohat Road near the Ring Road flyover, directing the authorities to ask the female councillors to resign. The authorities were warned against visits of NGO officials to the office.

Threats were also hurled at bankers and medical representatives for wearing western dress. Residents of the city’s rural parts, particularly the southern villages, are already under stress following tension between militant groups in Khyber Agency and Darra Adamkhel.

Many fear a bloody clash between tribesmen and villagers of the southern Peshawar, mostly located in the Town-IV, if proper arrangements were not made to stop the spillover of militants from the nearby tribal areas.

Militant groups have made several villagers hostage in the past and some of them were later slaughtered.
