Stepfather booked for slaughtering teenage girl

By Imran Ayub

KARACHI: A teenage girl was slaughtered allegedly by her stepfather in Orangi Town area in the early hours of Wednesday, police and witnesses said.

The brutal incident left the residents of Masoomabad in Orangi Town’s Sector 11½ in shock and fear.

They said a large number of people saw the body of 15-year-old Rehana lie in a pool of blood on her bed in the courtyard of her house.

“The police were approached by the people of the area early in the morning,” said Assistant Sub-Inspector Ali Raza, who is in charge of the area police post called Toori Bangash.

“They told us about the murder shortly after hearing the screams of the girl’s brothers upon seeing her butchered body.”

The incident seemed to have taken place before sunrise and the two married brothers of Rehana only came to know about it when they woke up, he said, adding that the victim was living in the two-room house with her two brothers and the stepfather.

“The rooms were in the use of the two brothers and Rehana used to sleep in the courtyard with her stepfather Imtiaz alias Baboo,” said ASI Raza.

“The girl was apparently killed by Imtiaz to punish his second wife, Bano Bibi, for perceived disobedience.”

The police meanwhile found a sharp knife that was said to have been used to slaughter the girl.

“The couple, Imtiaz and Bano, got married between 13 and 14 years ago and it was their second marriage,” said Inspector S.M. Raza, the SHO of the Iqbal Market police station. “Bano has five daughters and three sons from her first husband. All the children are married except the youngest daughter Rehana, who was killed today (Wednesday).”

He quoted Bano Bibi as saying that her marriage had been on the rocks for quite some time and she and her husband rowed frequently.

“Recently Imtiaz asked Bano not to meet her relatives and stay at home,” said Inspector Raza.

“Last Friday, Bano left the house alone to see one of her relatives and left a message for her husband that she would not return as she was angry about her husband’s attitude.”

Imtiaz got several messages delivered to his wife, asking her to return and threatened that he would do something that would leave her disappointed, added the SHO of the Iqbal Market police station.

“Both families originally belong to the NWFP. Imtiaz, who ran away after the incident, is a butcher by profession and works in partnership in one of the shops of the area.”

The police earlier shifted the body to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where doctors at the medico-legal section found a deep cut on the victim’s throat made by a sharp metal object.

They said the body was received between 8.30am and 9am but its condition showed that the victim had been killed at least four to five hours before the body reached the health facility.

Meanwhile, the Iqbal Market police station registered a case (FIR 329/2009) under Section 302 (premeditated murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of the victim’s elder brother, Arshad, against Imtiaz.
