PTI demands removal of PTV chairman

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf on Monday demanded immediate removal of Attaul Haq Qasmi from the chairmanship of the state-run Pakistan Television.

In a letter written by PTI leader Andleeb Abbas to Minister for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage Maryam Aurangzeb, the PTI stated that Qasmi’s appointment as the corporation’s managing director and chairperson is a “violation of rules” and a worst example of “nepotism” and “cronyism”.

Last week, PPP Senator Farhatullah Babar informed a Senate panel that Qasmi recently called a meeting of the PTV board and passed a resolution nominating himself as MD in addition to holding the post of chairperson of the television.

Andleeb questioned the grounds on which Qasmi influenced the BoD and nominated himself as MD which, she said, was a purely administrative post and Qasmi was completely unfit for it.

How could PTV afford to give a salary of more than Rs1.5 million to Qasmi as chairperson and another salary of millions of rupees in his capacity as MD, despite the fact that the corporation has been running under massive losses, she added.

Abbas expressed her reservations over the silence of the information ministry over misuse of the state-run TV and PID which bring forth a loss of Rs1 billion since 2013.

She slammed the PML-N for misusing state resources to defend the house of Sharifs and termed it institutional corruption.

Abbas pointed towards violation of the court orders by the information ministry by charging consumers to pay a mandatory fee and robbing the public.

She sought certified information and response from information ministry over the questions asked within a span of 21 days as specified in the Freedom of Information Ordinance-2002.
