PPP always raises voice for women’s rights: Taseer

LAHORE: The Pakistan PeopleÂ’s Party (PPP) is a liberal party and has always raised its voice for the rights of women, Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer said on Tuesday.

The governor made these remarks while meeting a delegation of the Aurat Foundation, a leading non-government organisation (NGO), at the GovernorÂ’s House. Taseer said the PPP government preferred making women individually responsible in society. The governor said democracy and human rights were indispensable for the socio-economic development of the country. Taseer said the PPP’s struggle for democracy and the rights of the people could not be found anywhere in the world. The governor said former prime ministers Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto considered the people as the ‘real power’ and had sacrificed their lives for the rights of the people.

The governor said as Muslims, our top priority should be the protection of women. The Aurat Foundation delegation presented a report to Taseer, which stated that incidents of violence on women, acid throwing and sexual harassment were on the rise in Punjab, especially in Lahore. The delegation requested the governor to improve the performance of the police stations and Darul Amman, as they were involved in humiliating women instead of protecting them.
