Police fail to ‘crack’ Omar; raid nine key areas, nab 18 suspects
KARACHI- Shaikh Omar, the prime suspect in American reporter Daniel Pearl kidnapping case, is so far adamantly denying his link, or even a faint acquaintance with the three e-mailers remanded to police custody, since the day of his arrest, police sources said.
Shaikh Omar is the prime suspect in the abduction of the Mumbai-based Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in Karachi on Jan 23. The police on Tuesday arrested him in Lahore and shifted him to Karachi the same day.
The police quizzed Omar on Wednesday, now in Sindh Police Anti-terrorist Wing’s (ATW) custody, and subsequently raided at least nine places almost all of them in the eastern district of Karachi, and arrested 18 men believed to be his accomplices.
The police parties conducted raids at houses in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Aziz Bhatti, Al-Falah, Green Town, Mochko, New Karachi and Clifton. “We are scrutinising our catch and at present it is very fluid,” a police officer said.
The police sources further claimed that Omar denied knowledge of the whereabouts of Daniel Pearl in captivity but opened up his mouth to drop a few names of his comrades. “We have arrested some of them he referred to… Let’s see what comes out,” the same source said.
