PM to announce victim fund for journalists: Kaira

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani will soon announce establishment of a journalist victim fund, insurance facility and the international journalist award for the members of the press.

This was announced by Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira while addressing a seminar on “Role of female journalists in a developing society”, organised jointly by the Potohar Organisation for Development Advocacy (Poda) and the Aurat Foundation in connection with the International Women’s Day here on Thursday.

“The government intends to support this industry and will take initiatives to strengthen it,” the minister said and asked the National Press Club (NPC) to send its recommendations for the new government advertisement policy.

He said women were facing the issue of gender bias in the country, asking them to continue their struggle to get their rights. He said the male-dominated society was not fully ready to give women their due rights.

Speaking about the gender bias, Kaira said the issue existed the world over, including the US and the UK. But the women had carved their space in the society with their own efforts there, he added.

“A change in society will come only through basic administrative changes. But the women have to step forward to ensure their rights as men are reluctant to assist them in this regard,” he added.

The minister said despite achieving economic progress, Pakistan was still a developing country, adding that throughout its history, even men had not been able to make free political and democratic choices. He called for a constant change in the society, so that everybody could express their viewpoint in state decisions.
