PFUJ, Apnec urge govt to constitute 8th Wage Board

By: Kalbe Ali

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) and All Pakistan Newspapers Employees Confederation (Apnec) have welcomed the Supreme Court verdict regarding enforcement of the Seventh Wage Board Award and urged the government to constitute the Eighth Wage Board.

Talking to Dawn on Wednesday, PFUJ president Pervaiz Shaukat said the historic judgment was a great relief for the journalist community and media workers. “We fought for it for 11 years. It is a great moment that the award will have to be implemented with the cost incurred on fighting the case.”

Now, he said, the newspaper managements would have to implement the 7th wage award in letter and sprit and also to announce the constitution of 8th Wage Board.

The PFUJ has convened a consultative meeting of its allied unions on Oct 29 and 30 to decide its future course of action.

Apnec chairman Shafiuddin Ashraf termed the SC verdict a victory for newspaper workers and urged the owners to accept it with an open heart.

He expressed the hope that the owners would implement the judgment in letter and spirit and would move towards constitution of the already-delayed Eighth Wage Board. He said all newspaper workers, including those working on contracts, should be given arrears on the basis of the SC decision.
