PEMRA to implement CoD of electronic media

ISLAMABAD – Chairman Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) Absar Alam yesterday said the PEMRA will play its role in implementation of electronic media Code of Conduct.

He was talking to media persons here on the occasion of bidding process for auction of FM licences for 67 cities.

He asked the media houses to promote good and healthy tradition of journalism so that no punitive action could be taken against them. He also asked the electronic media houses to follow the PEMRA code of conduct and to promote soft image of the country.

He said operation against illegal Indian Direct to Home television was continuing successfully and raids are being conducted throughout the country. He said that PEMRA teams have taken the equipment into custody of different cable operators who were airing Indian content.

The PEMRA had completely banned airing of Indian content and illegal DTH across the country.

Earlier yesterday, licences for 34 FM radio stations were auctioned, however, 33 more licences will be auctioned on Tuesday at the PEMRA headquarters. The highest bid was offered for Jaranwala FM radio which was Rs20 million, Dera Ghazi Khan Rs19.1 million, Chinyot FM channel Rs17.5 million, Charsadda Rs10.06 million, Dadu Rs5 million and Attock Rs3.4 million.

Thirty-four licences offered for auction included Attock, Astore, Awaran, Benazirabad, Bahawalnagar, Bannu, Buner, Barkhan, Chaghai, Chicha Watni, Dadu, Dera Allah Yar, Dera Murad Jamali, Digri, DG Khan, Daska, D.I.Khan, Diamer, Gilgit, Ghizer, Ghanche, Gojra, Hafizabad, Hunza-Nagar, Hala, Hangu, Jacobabad, Jhang, Jaranwala, Jhangira, Jhal Magsi and Jaffar Abad.

No bids were received for Barkhan and Chaghai FM channels. The two-day bidding process for auction of FM licenses for 67 cities will continue tomorrow and licences for 33 more channels will be auctioned.
