PEMRA terminates 2 FM radio broadcasts

ISLAMABAD (APP) – Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has closed down two illegal FM Radio Broadcasts in Mardan district of NWFP.
“PEMRA, in its recent drive against illegal FM Radio Stations, has closed down two FM radio broadcasts working illegally in Mardan, NWFP,” said PEMRA spokesman here Thursday.

“PEMRA has closed down around 175 illegal FM Radio Stations in NWFP and other areas of the country during the last one year as a result of the pragmatic planning and help provided by the respective Provincial Governments,” said the PEMRA spokesman.
He said under the drive, a close coordination with the NWFP government and local administration is being maintained and the PEMRA invariably seeks the assistance from provincial authorities for this purpose.
PEMRA has terminated transmission of two illegal FM radio broadcasts namely Madrassa Tafheem-ul-Quran Parhoti, Mardan, which was being run by Maulana Faisal Bari.
The other radio broadcast namely Madrassa Arabia Islamia Sahwal Dher, Mardan, which was being run by Maulana Hussain Ahmed. This is an ongoing campaign and the pace will be maintained to curb the menace of illegal FM broadcasts, added the PEMRA official.
The spokesman further said that PEMRA solicits continued support of the people in addition to the respective provincial governments for stemming the specter of illegal radio stations which are spreading hatred and sectarian strife in the society.
PEMRA has also issued clear directives that illegal operations will include legal and punitive action, he said.
