Pakistan Broadcasters Association seeks withdrawal of FIR against Midas

KARACHI: The Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) has expressed grave concerns over the filing of a first information report (FIR) by the Punjab government against M/s Midas (Pvt) Ltd and its Chief Executive Inam Akbar.

In a statement, the PBA strongly condemned the unprofessional and unnecessary step taken by the Punjab government. It said the commercial disputes should be resolved in an amicable manner in the first instance and in case of failure in an amicable resolution it may be resolved through various civil modes of dispute resolution. Resorting to criminal remedies in commercial matters is completely unwarranted and disproportionate given the circumstances at hand, it added.

The statement said the advertising agency, engaged in advertising business and as such accredited with PBA, is enjoying a good reputation in the media industry. It noted that bypassing all other modes of dispute resolution, which would have been more expedient and effective, the Punjab government has resorted to an extreme and entirely unnecessary step, which may unduly tarnish the reputation of an otherwise well-reputed business.

The PBA said that billions of rupees of media industry have been put on stake due to the uncalled for and unwarranted action of the Punjab government. It urged Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif to constitute a joint committee comprising the Punjab government representatives and representative bodies of media industry to get the matter resolved amicably. It also demanded of the chief minister to immediately withdraw the FIR lodged against Midas (Pvt) Ltd.
