Operation launched in Mohmand

GHALANAI: The army went into action in the Mohmand Agency on Friday in support of paramilitary troops and killed at least 12 militants between Chamarkand and Sheikh Baba areas.

Two army personnel laid down their lives during the clashes. They are Lt Fayaz and Naek Mazar. Helicopter gunships, tanks and artillery provided cover as troops moved into Sheikh Baba, Ghanam Shah, Chamarkand and Ghungat Jure areas, officials said.

According to officials, troops demolished dozens of houses used by militants, officials said.

Accrding to local people, a woman and a man died when a mortar shell hit a house in Ghanama Shah Khanzadgan.

Tribesmen are leaving Surana Darra, Ghanam Shah, Matti, Chamarkand, Ghungat Jure and Sur Dag areas and moving to relief camps in Charsadda, Mardan, Nowshera and Peshawar.

About 50 families were stranded in Maimandi because of the non-availability of transport. Militants fired a mortar shell and a rocket which fell near a college in Ghalanai, near the base camp of the Mohmand Riffles.
