Latif Jamal laid to rest

KARACHI – Leading industrialist, philanthropist and former chairman of the PPI news agency Latif E. Jamal, who died on Friday night , was laid to rest in his family graveyard at Karachi’s Mewashah on Saturday.

Just a week before his death, Mr Jamal had handed over a building and land for a campus to the NED Engineering University for introducing bio-engineering and bio-medical courses in Pakistan. A few months back, he laid the foundation of a national science centre at Karachi University. It was his help that led to the expansion and upgradation of the university’s HEJ Institute of Chemistry.

In the 60s, his services in promoting Pakistan’s trade with Iran and Turkey as president of the now defunct RCD Chamber of Commerce were recognized by Iran and he was awarded the Nishan-i-Humayun. For fostering economic ties and cooperation in academic field, as well as business between Pakistan and Germany, he was decorated by Bonn as a knight commander. He was also a recipient of the Sitara Quaid-i-Azam.

Latif E. Jamal was president of the All-Pakistan Memon Federation and the Pakistan Gujrati Association and co-founder of the World Memon Federation.

He has left behind two sons and four daughters.

In his condolence message, Vice-Chancellor of Karachi University Prof Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui said that the deceased had committed himself to the promotion of education, science and technology in the country, agencies add.

Vice-Chancellor of the NED University Abu Kalam and Registrar Syed Ghulam Qadir Shah, and President of the FPCCI Riaz Ahmed Tata have expressed their deep sorrow and grief over the demise of Latif E. Jamal.

At the NED University, the news of his death was heard with shock and grief, said the NED University registrar.

He said the deceased had donated, on behalf of his family, not only the building of the HEJ institute to the Karachi University, but also another building to the NED University.

KCCI President Khalid Firoz, Acting President Mian Abrar Ahmed and managing committee members eulogized the services of late Latif Jamal.

They eulogized the services rendered by the deceased as president of the RCD Chamber and vice-president of the FPCCI, besides a renowned philanthropist.
