KPC has a distinguished place in democratic history: Kaira

KARACHI: Federal Minister for Information & Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira has congratulated the newly elected officer bearers of the Karachi Press Club (KPC).

The Minister visited the KPC and met the office bearers. He said that these offices also carry lots of responsibility. As Federal Information Minister he assured Government’s support to the journalist community. Qamar Zaman Kaira said that the KPC has a distinguished place in the country’s democratic history. He stated that the KPC has always played a leading role in the freedom struggle for the press.

The Minister said that the present government in accordance with the vision of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto has always fostered tolerance during the past two and a half years, which is the essence of democracy. He stated that today there is no restriction on the press or freedom of expression nor is there any political prisoner in the country.

Kaira said that he believes that hadn’t general Zia ul Haq dislodged the government of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in 1977, and had the democratic process let continue, today Pakistan would have been among developed countries.

He also pointed towards the problems faced by the Karachi Press Club and said that the issue of the lease of the Club’s building is being processed and hoped that this matter would be resolved soon. The Minister said that he would take up the issue of housing colony for the journalists with the provincial government.
