Kayani played role to avert poll rigging: French journalist

RAWALPINDI: Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani played an important role in holding of free and fair elections in Pakistan in a peaceful atmosphere by stopping large-scale rigging, a French journalist has said.

Gen Kayani had ordered the army not to partake in any political and electoral activity on the election day, said French journalist Veneeza while talking to a correspondent of daily Jang in Paris. By not allowing President Musharraf to rig elections, the Pakistani military and its retired officers played an important role in elections, said the journalist, adding that the step was aimed at restoring the armed forces repute.

The French journalist said that by restoring their repute, the military officers had saved Pakistan from anarchy.Meanwhile, Pakistan People’s Party France President Zahid Iqbal Khan and Fayyaz Chaudhry said that their party would form government in the centre as well as in all provinces. They said the main reason of their party’s success was that its leader Benazir Bhutto sacrificed her life.
