Karachi University telephone exchange catches fire

KARACHI, March 27,2005: The telephone exchange, information technology (IT) Hub, computer networking and cabling system of the Karachi University (KU) were gutted on March 26 when a fire broke out in its administration block.

According to details, all of a sudden fire erupted in the telephone exchange of the KU, situated within the administration block causing complete damage to the entire communication network and its cabling system.

KU authorities called the fire brigade, which controlled the fire within half an hour.

Sources in the fire brigade said that after receiving information they dispatched a fire tender, which extinguished the fire. Six computers, exchange panel and optical fibre system were damaged, the sources added.

The cause of the fire was electric short circuit, while losses were yet to be ascertained, the sources said.

Prof Sarwar Naseem, the media adviser to the KU Vice Chancellor (VC) and official spokesman of Karachi University, confirming the incident said, “The fire erupted in the telephone exchange adjacent to the administration block accidentally causing damage to the entire communication network.”

About 350 lines out of 600 were operative in the telephone exchange, which was completely damaged, he said.The damaged system would be restored within the next 48 hours he said adding that initially losses have been estimated at Rs2.5 to Rs3 million.
