By: Asad Farooq

KARACHI: Karachi Gymkhana (KG) Library and Literary Committee organised a ‘Mushaira-e-Tanz-o-Mazah’ at the Gymkhana hall, here Friday night. The literary gathering was a part of celebrations, being organised in connection with the 125th anniversary of the gymkhana.

Renowned senior poet Anwer Barelwi was the chief guest on the occasion.

Besides, various prominent poets of the metropolis, including Abdul Hakim Nasif, Saeed Aagha, Izra Sadiq, Mirza Aasi Akhter, MS Alam, Roubina Tehseen Bina, Fakhar Ullah Shah, and Yousaf Shaikhani fascinated audience with their outstanding poetry. They targeted various issues and individuals, including Shoaib-Sania, Eidul Azha related happenings including impacts of inflation, government-opposition tussle, Pakistan’s foreign policy, situation of railway department, corruption in cricket and government departments particularly Hajj ministry.

Audience laughed their hearts out and overwhelmingly appreciated the poetry, appropriate usage of words and mental and literary approaches of poets. Contemporary to the traditional Mushairas, trend of clapping seemed to be the latest trend, as a few decades earlier, it had been considered against the ethics of poets and poetry to clap in Mushairas.

Through their beautiful poetry, they not only compelled the audience to forget their grievances for a while, but also touched the miseries of the people in a very frank manner. Even in their humour, they managed to tell the audience that laureates, particularly poets are the most sensitive people of the society. A large number of literary critics, poetry lovers, business community members, retired bureaucrats and civil servants along with their families came to attend the Mushaira. It is pertinent to mention here that audience mostly comprised of senior citizens, which told the need to introduce youth with literary activities so as to save the cultural and lingual heritage of the country.

KG president Ali A Raheem, vice president Dr Zahid Hassan Ansari and KG Library and Literary Committee convener Muhammad Jawed Bandokada was also present on the occasion.
