Journalists urged to ensure personal security

PESHAWAR – Participants of a workshop titled ‘personal security and conflict reporting’ have urged the journalist community to take strict steps to ensure their own security while reporting in dangerous zones.

The workshop was organised by a media organisation here at Peshawar Press Club on Monday.

The speakers informed the journalists on the occasion about various steps they could adopt for their personal security while performing duty in a conflict zone. They said amid the deteriorating law and order situation, the journalist community should perform their duty with extreme care, as life of human being was more precious than ever thing. They said the journalist must inform office colleagues and security manager of his organization regarding whereabouts of his assignment and other important functions.

They said when a journalist attended open atmosphere; he should choose such a place for himself which was comparatively safer having low chances of damage in case of suicide attacks or other emergencies.

They said the journalists should keep low profile for him and should not inform others regarding his visit to the important locality for coverage.

They said at the time of any emergency and threat, the journalist must inform police and his management for taking timely security measures.

The speakers said that when journalist knows that he has been being threatened by any he should change his routes with regular interval.

The management of the media organisations has the duty to provide necessary communication device like satellite phone or mobile phone to the journalists for their security in times of emergency.
