Journalist beaten, detained

LANDI KOTAL – An organization of the Sheikhmalkhel tribe in Bara on November 6, thrashed a local journalist and put him in a private jail in the Bar Qambarkhel area, sources said.

The Sheikhmalkhel tribe accused Qazi Rauf, a reporter of Daily Express, of misreporting about the activities of their organization.

The Sheikhmalkhels and a religious organization are at loggerheads over the establishment of an illegal checkpoint at Dagari in the Bara tehsil where they received toll tax from vehicles carrying smuggled goods from Afghanistan to Bara.

The Sheikhmalkhels had long issued an ‘arrest warrant’ for Qazi Rauf for his alleged support to the religious outfit, Amr bil Maroof wa Nahi Anil Munkir. Qazi Rauf, who himself belongs to the Sheikhmalkhel tribe, was on professional duty on Saturday morning when he was picked up by some armed youth. He was severely beaten up and one of his arms fractured, sources said.

Later, he was shifted to a private jail in the Bar Qmbarkhel area. A journalist, Nasrullah Afridi, who visited Qazi Rauf, said he was chained and had torture marks on his body.

The Tribal Union of Journalists, Khyber Agency unit, lodged a complaint with the Bara political administration.
