ISLAMABAD: The European Union (EU) on Wednesday urged Pakistani authorities to ensure that local government officials didn’t misuse state resources during the election campaign.

According to a statement issued by the EU, the coalition has set up an election observation mission in Pakistan to offer an independent assessment of whether the elections are conducted in accordance with international standards.

The EU also welcomed President Pervez Musharraf’s commitment that the February 18 elections would be held in a free, fair, transparent and peaceful manner. It said public confidence in the electoral process could be promoted through an open and consultative election administration, strictly neutral caretaker government and media freedom. The EU statement also lauded the administration’s assurances that the counting and tabulation processes would be open to scrutiny by candidates, their agents and observers. It said the results should be displayed immediately after counting was completed. The statement reiterated the coalition’s call for the immediate release of all political detainees to restore people’s confidence in the independence of the judiciary, rule of law and democratic process.
