Govt ‘failure’ to protect women’s rights slammed

LAHORE: A women’s rights organisation criticised the government for its ‘failure’ to protect the rights of women at a meeting here on Sunday.

Speaking at the meeting in Kot Lakhpat Industrial Area, Working Women Organisation Chairperson Rubina Jamil said the government had done nothing to rid the women of suppression under the feudal system. She said the government had failed to repeal the ‘discriminatory’ Hudood Ordinance promulgated by former military dictator Ziaul Haq and eliminate inhuman traditions like ‘karo kari’ and ‘vani’.

She said that slogans of life protection and honour for women proved false and there was an increase in incidence of crime against women because of failure of the government to change the feudal mindset. She said the government had failed to ensure wages for women on a par with men for similar work. She said the Working Women Organisation would organise a rally for women from the Lahore Press Club to the Punjab Assembly on Women’s Day on Monday (today).
