Government to announce Information Technology policy this month

ISLAMABAD- The government is set to announce the information technology policy this month. said Minister for Science and technology Dr Attur Rehman.

Launching the first IT product of its kind Digital Atlas of Pakistan”, the Minister said the policy would be aimed at popularising and promoting the use of the technology. Digital Atlas Pakistan provides detailed information about natural resources, soil geology. water courses, vegetation, wildlife. land management system, urban infrastructure products, seismic zones, rail network and climate conditions.

The Minister said in order to encourage IT, the government is also planning to set up a series of software parks in the country provide facilities to software exporters.

The minister said the government has already earmarked Rs 15 billion to the IT promotion and reduced significantly the internet rates. He emphasised the need for high quantity basic research, applied research and government policies and infrastructure to reap the benefits of information technology. He said the government was giving top priority to information technology area as high technology will give boost to gross domestic product of the country.

Rehman also called for maximum investment in the education sector stressing that knowledge lies at the development. He said the government is also preparing programmes for promotion of e-commerce and training of manpower in computer technology.

He appreciated the efforts of the Pakistani professionals for bringing out a quality product on Pakistan that will significantly contribute towards its positioning on International IT map.
