Formula announced for unity within CPNE
LAHORE: The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors conciliation committee head, Majid Nizami, the Editor-in-Chief and publisher of Nawa-i-Waqt Group of Publications, has announced a formula for unity within the CPNE.
He has called for convening a meeting of the CPNE general body of November 15, 2010, on a 15-day notice, which should elect 35 members of the standing committee. This standing committee would then elect the new office-bearers in its meeting. Majid Nizami was speaking as the chief guest at the CPNE standing committee meeting, held at the Avari Hotel, Lahore, on Friday, April 29, 2011. The meeting was chaired by CPNE President Jamil Athar Qazi.
Addressing the meeting, Majid Nizami urged materialising the unity formula with sincerity. He said the CPNE is the most important body to safeguard the freedom of Press in the country and, therefore, its sanctity should be preserved. Later, a declaration was written for unity within the CPNE and besides Majid Nizami, the council office-bearers, including CPNE President Jamil Athar Qazi, Secretary General Illyas Shakir and the standing committee members, signed the declaration. The complete text of the resolution, prepared on the recommendation of Majid Nizami, is as under:
“A meeting of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) standing committee was held at Avari Hotel, Lahore on April 29, 2011. The meeting was chaired by CPNE President Jamil Athar Qazi, who apprised the meeting about the efforts being made for unification of the two factions of the CPNE.
“Mr Majid Nizami also attended the meeting on special invitation, and expressed the need for unity within the CPNE in an effective manner. In response to his suggestion, it was decided with complete consensus that a meeting of the CPNE members of November 15, 2010, should be called on a two weeks notice, which should elect the 35-member standing committee of the CPNE. Then the newly elected standing committee should elect the new office-bearers of the CPNE.
“The meeting decided unanimously that the meeting agenda would be issued by Secretary General Illyas Shakir, and the meeting would be chaired by Mr Majid Nizami, the Editor-in-Chief and publisher of Nawa-i-Waqt Group of Publications.”
