Filing of nomination papers: ICT admin asked to take foolproof security steps

ISLAMABAD: The government on Wednesday directed the Islamabad administration to ensure foolproof security arrangements on the eve of filing of nomination papers by the presidential candidates with the Election Commission of Pakistan.

Talking to a group of parliamentarians who called on him here, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said the government would take all necessary measures to ensure peaceful environment before and during the presidential election.

“This national obligation has to be conducted in accordance with the constitutional provisions which also entrust the responsibility upon the government to maintain conducive atmosphere,” the prime minister was quoted as saying.

He said law enforcement agencies had been instructed to adopt appropriate course of action to protect the life and property of people. “No one will be allowed to violate the law of the land,” the PM said.

He said the government believed in dialogue with all political forces to achieve consensus on all issues of national importance and it would lead to further strengthen democratic process in the country.

The PM said that negative politics had been rejected by the masses and all political parties should uphold the national interest. “The re-election of President General Pervez Musharraf will ensure continuity of progress and prosperity of Pakistan and all those who want to promote national interest will support him during the upcoming presidential election,” he added. The presidential election will be followed by general election, which will be major events in the country’s political history, the PM said.

Aziz said the PML and its allied parties were well poised for the next general election and it was the responsibility of the PML workers to take the party’s message of good governance, transparency and improvement in the living standard of the masses effectively to the people. The parliamentarians informed the prime minister that the PML was well geared for the elections on the basis of its performance and that people would favour them to ensure continuity of development and prosperity in the country.

They also discussed development projects in their areas and said that the timely completion of the ongoing schemes would bring further improvement in the socio-economic uplift of the people.
