Join us in calling for an end to impunity for the killing of Abb Takk Television journalist, Shan Dahar. Use the tweet provided in the action box to tell authorities in Pakistan to resume investigations immediately.
In 2014, Shan Dahar began researching a story about local hospitals illegally selling medications donated by NGOs. On New Year’s Day in 2014, two assailants shot Shan in the back. He died in Chandka Medical College Hospital where he was left unattended for nine hours. During this time, Shan identified his killers over the telephone with family members.
At the time of the incident, the local police declared Shan Dahar’s death an accident, despite strong evidence that he had been intentionally targeted and that the initial investigation had been compromised by political influence.
As the result of successful lobbying from Shan Dahar’s family, local media groups and IFEX member the Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF), the Inspector General of Police ordered a reinvestigation in April 2016.
However, six months later, there has been little progress. The location of the main suspects is unknown and Shan’s family reports that all efforts to continue the investigation have halted. It is for this reason that IFEX has made Shan Dahar’s story an emblematic case for the No Impunity campaign.
Help us send a message to the Pakistani authorities that Shan Dahar’s loved ones deserve justice, and impunity for attacks on journalists in Pakistan must no longer be tolerated!
