Defamation law to check media coup, says Kaira

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira has pointed out that some media persons have been targeting the Presidency and it seemed that they have staged a coup against the incumbent government.

He also underlined that the PPP-led incumbent government aimed to strengthen the law of defamation to restrict the habit of accusing others for personal benefits.

Talking to a media programme here on Saturday, he stated that absence of the chief minister Punjab during the visit of President Asif Ali Zardari to the province had been scheduled by the PML-N adding that dialect of the governor Punjab should be assumed as epitome of his personal opinion.

Responding to a query, he stated that Federal Interior Minister A Rehman Malik shouldn’t have aired any emotional statement in connection with the presence of Blackwater in Pakistan adding that rangers had been deployed in Karachi for the assistance of police to control the situation in the metropolitan.

He also elaborated that at this juncture of time the country couldn’t afford any mid-term elections adding that former President Pervez Musharraf should realize his popularity with the results of Gilgit-Baltistan polls, if he was ever interested in launching his political career.

Replying another query, he stated that PPP would not nominate its candidate in NA-55 and NA-123 constituencies adding that the incumbent government didn’t aim to take credit from the nation at this time.
