Bahawalpur rally against Geo Super ban

BAHAWALPUR: The Bahawalpur Union of Journalists (BhUJ), cricket, hockey and other sports organisations on Sunday staged a protest rally against the closure of Geo Super.

The protesters condemned the closure of Geo Super and chanted slogans against the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra). They demanded an immediate restoration of Geo Super and termed its closure an attack on freedom of the press. Addressing the protesters, Hidayatullah Khan said Geo Super was the only sports channel of the country which was promoting sports despite financial loss. Condemning on Geo Super closure, BhUJ president Muhammad Ameen Abbasi said the ban on Geo Super was an attack on freedom of the press. He said the government wanted to ban the media and the journalists will defend the freedom of the press. He demanded the restoration of Geo Super.

A cricket club organiser, Fauzul Kabeer, termed the closure of Geo Super a conspiracy against the country’s sports. Many other cricketers and sportsmen chanted slogans against Pemra and closure of Geo Super. They vowed to continue their protest for the restoration of Geo Super.

Our Okara correspondent adds: The District Union of Journalists has termed the ban on Geo Super and Aag TV channels illegal.

The union held a meeting at the Okara Press Club on Sunday, which was addressed by Muhammad Aslam Paracha, Javed Rahi, Rao Fazlur Rehman, Rao Mushtaq Qadir Khan, Munawar Zaheer, Ihtesham Khawaja, Abdul Waheed Ch and Waris Haideri.

The journalists warned if the ban was not withdrawn, media persons and members of civil society would revive the history of the movement launched for the restoration of the sacked judiciary.
