57 killed over Karo-Kari during 2006 in Jacobabad
JACOBABAD: About 57 men and women had been killed over the pretext of Karo-Kari, while 67 people lost their lives in different incidents in the district of Jacobabad during 2006, says a human rights watchdog report. The report was launched at a seminar on human rights at the Jacobabad press club on Friday. The report states that despite a ban imposed by the Supreme Court of Pakistan, 35 Jirgas had been held. Similarly, 35 men and 15 women had committed suicide in the year.
The report states that 26 men and women had been killed over tribal disputes while 47 robberies and 57 thefts incidents took place in different parts of the district. It states that 529 people had been arrested in 100 raids and 114 cases had been registered by the police. Thirty-two persons, including 16 women, had been kidnapped while six men and as many women sexually assaulted, it said, adding that 657 protest demonstrations, sit-ins and hunger strikes had been held in various parts of the district during 2006.
