Karachi: Sindh Minister Sharmila Farooqi has replaced Shazia Marri as secretary information of the PPP’s women wing in the province.

A notification to this effect was issued by the chairperson of the wing, Faryal Talpur.

Ms Marri had been working on this post for the last many years.

She had contested the last elections on a reserved seat for women and was later appointed a minister.

Sharmila, daughter of a former chairman of Pakistan Steel Mills, Usman Farooqi, and niece of the Principal Secretary to the President, Salman Farooqi, was recently given the status of a provincial minister.

Sharmila had been active in the field of human rights, focusing on the welfare of prisoners and reforming prisons.

Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani ordered the release of more than a 100 Indian fishermen on Monday on the recommendations of Ms Farooqi after she had found the fishermen languishing in inhuman conditions at a prison in Naushero Feroze.

Meanwhile, the chief secretary of Sindh informed the prime minister on Monday that 454 Indian fishermen were in prisons in Sindh.

The Sindh government had requested the prime minister to release these fishermen in the light of the directives of the federal review board of the Supreme Court which had set the government the deadline of August 6, 2010, for releasing all such prisoners.
