‘Hostels for working women in five divisions by end of 2009’

Karachi: Hostels for working women will be established in five divisions of Sindh by the end of this year, Minister for Women Development Tauqeer Fatima Bhutto said.
During the question-hour session in the Sindh Assembly on Wednesday, the minister said that hostels for working women and shelter homes for women were established in eight districts during the Benazir Bhutto government. These, however, were later occupied by Rangers, lawyers and other elements, while some were taken over by the Social Welfare Department. She said that the Working Women Hostel in Karachi was occupied by lawyers. To a question by Nadeem Bhutto as to why only six women were employed in the Women Development Department as compared to 45 men, the minister said she was trying to recruit more women. She said there was also a plan to establish complexes in five divisions to promote traditional skills of women. To a question by Shamim Ara Panhwar, the minister said the government was planning to establish a shelter home for women in Mirpurkhas.
To a question by Ghulam Mujadid Isran about the involvement of an NGO in political activity, Social Welfare Minister Nargis N.D Khan announced that she would hold an inquiry into the matter.
