‘Sindhi youth have found refuge in cultural activities’

Karachi: With Sindhi stalwart nationalists nowhere to guide, the Sindhi youth have taken refuge in cultural activities, Sindhi columnist and journalist Daudo Chandio told The News.

He made this observation ahead of the launching ceremony of his book “Sindh Soch Safar” at the Arts Council.

“The nationalist movement in Sindh has gone in the background after the death of GM Syed, assassination of Fazil Raho and ill-health of Rasool Bux Palijo; therefore, the Sindhi youth need to get inspiration from old guards,” Chandio said.

“The youth have no direction. The setback in the left movement has made them anchorless; now they have found refuge in cultural activities,” he observed.

“I am not pessimistic about the situation prevailing in Sindh,” he said. “But I agree there is a crisis because today we are lacking ideological commitment and training,” he said.

Chandio debuted in journalism in 1996 from daily “Sawaal” (Question) published from Hyderabad. Now he works for the Sindhi TV channel KTN. The book “Sindh Soch Safar” is essentially political commentary on the events in Karachi such as May 12, and October 2007 when self-exiled PPP chairperson and twice Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto returned home, or the scenario arising out of Baloch nationalist leader Akbar Bugti’s assassination.

Then there were columns based on heated debates in the Sindh Assembly.

Asked who inspired him, Chandio said: “Faqir Mohammad Lashari and Nazir Leghari.”

Chandio has also contributed columns in Urdu newspapers such as daily “Khabrain” and daily “Jurrat.”

The book launching was scheduled at 3pm, but barring Speaker Sindh Assembly Nisar Ahmed Khuhro nobody was there on time. Khuhro went back and came again at about 5:15pm.

Khuhro said that through his columns, the author of Sindh Soch Safar guided the PPP when it was in power and in the opposition. His columns and articles, he said, were symptomatic of a strong commitment of a journalist towards his people and his nationality.

Minister for Culture Sassui Palijo, who arrived at about 5:15 pm, said Daudo happens to be a sober journalist who did not waste time in discussing non-issues. President Arts Council Ahmed Shah also spoke on the occasion.
