Cancelling declaration of Newspapers recommended

KARACHI- The Sindh Information Department has recommended the cancellation of declaration of 177 newspapers including daily Masawat, owned by former prime minister Benszir Bhutto.

According to the Information Department, these newspapers failed to submit the required copies of the publications to the press section as a result the department decided to recommend to the concerned deputy commissioners to cancel the declarations of these publications.

The authorities concerned claimed that these publications were not submitting their copies of publication since last one year. As per law the publisher of the newspaper is bound to submit at least 16 days publications to press section of the Information Department for record purpose.

According to officials, copies of some other old newspapers including Millat, Indus Time, Karachi Express, Ailan and Pakistan Observer are also not being submitted to the press section, ultimately the authorities recommended their cancellation.

Daily Masawat was launched by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)’s founder chairman Z.A Bhutto in 1969 from Karachi. Later the party also launched its Lahore edition.

After Bhutto, his widow Nusrat Bhutto took over as the chairperson of board of directors of the paper and then Benazir Bhutto took over. She nominated the PPP leader Taj Haider as administrator of the paper who quit the post in 1994 and Benazir nominated Jawaid Bukhari in his place.

Talking to this correspondent, Taj Haider said neither party nor Benazir Bhutto received any notice from the authorities concerned about violation of law or cancellation of the declaration of Masawat.

He said publication of daily Masawat Karachi was suspended in 1994 due to financial crisis. But, the newspaper is regularly published from Lahore and distributed in Karachi. He further said the last editor of Masawat Karachi was Khalid Aleg.

The Information Department has sent a list of 177 newspapers to DCs of Karachi districts South, East, West and Central for legal action.
