Workshop on scope of internet held at KU

Karachi: The University of Karachi’s Computer Science Department is set to start Cisco KU chapter activities. The department organised a workshop on “Internet of Everything” (IoE) on Thursday to share concepts of the need and use of internet in everyday lives.

Cisco is a worldwide leader in networking that transforms how people connect, communicate and collaborate with each other’s through internet. The company also manufactures hardware and awards various certificates after conducting tests, which are recognisable around the globe.

Addressing the participants of the workshop, held at the Umair Basha Information Technology Seminar Hall, workshop coordinator Dr Sadiq Ali Khan highlighted the importance of the workshop for the students. Rehan Hashmi, National Assembly member and member of the sub-committee on Higher Education Commission, was the chief guest while MPA Jamal Ahmed was the guest of honour.

Departmental Assistant Professor and Academy Coordinator at Cisco Support Centre (CTTC) Muhammad Noman Ali explained the IoE, saying: “Every computing device must be connected to a network, and 99 percent of the unconnected devices are expected to be on a network by 2020.”

He elaborated the tagline of the workshop and shared main parts related to the IoE.

The second session was conducted by Assistant Director IT at State Bank of Pakistan, Ahmer Saeed, who is also a Director at the Cisco Centre in CTTC. He talked about cyber security, modern security threats and their mitigation. He said every organisation accords priority to the protection of its assets and databases.

In his welcome address, In-charge DCS Badar Sami talked about the scope of Internet and also discussed the concept of IoE. Later, Professor Dr S. M Aqil Burney informed that when the department was set up in 1994 there were only 70 students and two teachers and today there were over 1,700 students and many teachers.

He said that the goal behind the concept was to have a peaceful and vibrant society, adding, “We need to interact with other people and the future depends on innovation”.

During his address, workshop co-coordinator Dr Khan said that through this workshop the Department of Computer Science aimed to start Cisco Academy activities at the Karachi University.

“The Internet now connects anywhere from 10 billion to 15 billion devices. Billions or even trillions of connections create unprecedented opportunities as well as new risks,” he said, adding, “I personally believe that the coming year will see three major shifts in education i.e. IoE, shared services and cloud computing”.

Elaborating, he said, “IoE means that the experiences that we deliver to students will be more connected, integrated, flexible and meaningful, besides positive and encouraging steps were being taken by the DCS by starting training and short courses through Cisco Academy, which may bring the revenue and resources for the department as well as enhancing the technical capabilities of the students to explore the market trends and requirements”.

In the end, both the guests urged the students to “make your passion your profession”. Rehan Hashmi MNA gave some facts and figures about the HEC grant, especially to the public sector universities in Karachi. He talked about the public-private partnership for providing more resources to new generation. He also appreciated the infrastructure facilities available at the department.
