Women-only bus service launched

KARACHI – Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad and his wife Shahina Ibad inaugurated a bus service meant exclusively for women on the occasion of the 57th Independence Day on August 14.

The inauguration ceremony was held at the Governor’s House here on Saturday and attended by Adviser to the Chief Minister Fatima Surayya Bajiya, Senator Nighat Baji, MPA Bilquees Mukhtar, Rehana Nasreen and a large number of women coming from different walks of life.

Speaking on the occasion, the governor said that working women and female student of schools and colleges had been facing a lot of problems related to travelling by public transport means.

The women-exclusive bus service has been launched to minimize their problems, the governor said and hoped that womenfolk would now be able to travel with respect and sense of security.

With the only exception of driver, he said, the entire system was being managed by women. Very soon, he added, the driver would also be a woman.

Two buses would initially be run between Surjani Town and Tower via Nagan Chowrangi, Sohrab Goth, Abul Hassan Ispahani Road, Gulshan Chowrangi, NIPA, Civic Centre, National Stadium, TV Station, Sharafabad, Bahadurabad, Tariq Road, Allahwali Chowrangi, Sharea Faisal, Abdullah Haroon Road, Regal, Burns Road, Jamia Cloth and M. A. Jinnah Road. The service would take 90 minutes to reach its final destination. Dr Ibad said that efforts were on to give the idea of ‘family bus service’ a practical shape.
