Women must improve IT knowledge

KARACHI – Speakers at a seminar on ‘Education for Socio-economic Empowerment of Women’ here on Saturday called for creating awareness about the importance of education and IT knowledge among women.

The seminar was organised by Education Forum of All Pakistan Women’s Association (Apwa).

Z A Nizami, Chancellor of Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology (SSUET), who was the chief guest on the occasion, stressed the need to improve IT knowledge among women. He said that in India thousands of women improved their economic and social status at home level after getting knowledge in IT.

He said that in this regard “I request the parents to provide them (girls) IT knowledge to tackle problems in the future”.

He said that several students were facing language problems. He said that it was incumbent on students to be well-versed in Urdu and at the same time they must attain proficiency in English language.

He said that SSUET was undertaking a study to determine which are the most employment-related disciplines. Nizami said he was confident that findings of such a study would also be discussed with other institutions in the country.

The seminar was presided over by Apwa President Begum Tazeen Faridi. In her speech, she said that women have to get their due rights in the society. One of the basic rights is to achieve education for building their character and polishing their mind. “A woman who is educated can share her husband’s responsibility.”

Narges Rehman, president of Karachi Women’s Peace Committee on NGO’s initiatives toward poverty alleviation also spoke. An APTECH presentation was held on careers for women in education. Begum Jehan Hai, vice-president Apwa (Education) presented the welcome address and said that women have to come forward to deal with the new challenges in all walks of life.
