Woman killed by son, former husband

By Tahir Siddiqui

KARACHI: A 40-year-old woman, the mother of eight who had remarried a 23-year-old man three weeks ago, was killed on Friday at her shantytown house in Sohrab Goth allegedly by her 22-year-old son and former husband, both of whom fled.

The Sohrab Goth police said that the victim woman, Sultana, a resident of Hingora Goth, had remarried a 23-year-old mason, Dawood, three weeks ago and the newly-married couple was living with the woman’s former husband, Saifur Rehman, 65, and the children in a rented house.

They said that the victim’s eldest son, Hidayatur Rehman, and her former husband, hailing from Peshawar, beat the woman to death at their under-construction house situated near their rented house at around 2.30pm.

The victim’s eldest daughter, Shamim, lodged a murder case against her father and brother for killing her mother under Sections 302 (premeditated murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

The body, discovered by one of the victim’s four daughters at around 5pm, was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where medico-legal sources said that the woman received fatal wounds to her head from a heavy object.

The police said that the victim woman was killed by a spade that was also seized from the crime-scene.

The police said that the suspects took the victim to their under-construction house on the pretext of showing her the construction work at around 12noon. They said that Shamim, 18, also accompanied them.

The police said that the victim’s former husband left the woman and their two children at the under-construction house and went away. They said that the elderly suspect returned after a short while and took his daughter back home telling her that her maternal uncle, enraged over the re-marriage of the victim, was waiting at their house.

Quoting Shamim, the police said that Saifur Rehman left her at the house where she, however, did not find her maternal uncle. She said that her father left the house immediately after leaving her there and later she discovered her mother’s body at the under-construction house.

The police said that Saifur Rehman had divorced the victim on February 13 this year and the woman remarried on July 11.

The police said that both the suspects fled and efforts were being made to track them down.

Uxoricide

A 28-year-old woman was allegedly shot dead by her husband at their house in Baloch Goth, a shantytown in the remit of the Orangi Town police station.

The police said that the suspect, Wali Khan, hailing from Buner, the NWFP, fled after pumping a bullet into the head of Sher Bano, the mother of two sons and as many daughters, aged two to eight years.

They said that the suspect, a labourer, who killed the woman over a domestic dispute, also took away his children.

Medico-legal sources at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where the body was brought for a post-mortem examination, told Dawn that the victim was shot point-blank to her forehead and the bullet pierced her skull blowing off her head.

The police registered a case (FIR 432/2009) against the absconding suspect under Section 302 of the PPC on the complaint of the victim’s father, Ghulam Qadir.
