Woman burned to death by in-laws

HARIPUR, April 24 2006: A woman was burned to death allegedly by her husband and his relatives in Kharbara Ghazi village on Saturday April 22. An FIR has been registered against the husband, Zakir Hussain, and other accused under Section 302/34 of the Pakistan Penal Code. Police have arrested Mr Hussain and his brother Mubashir Hussain, while the other accused are at large.

The victim, Naheed Akhtar, 22, told the investigation officer in hospital that her husband had married her last year without the consent of his parents and they lived in Abbottabad. She said that during her stay with her husband she was frequently subjected to violence as her in-laws wanted him to divorce her. She said she had gone to he parents’ home.

On Saturday April 22, her husband called her to his home and when she reached there with her mother Marriam Bibi, she was doused with kerosene by Zakir, his father Dildar Hussain, brother Mubashir, sisters-in-law Zil-i-Huma and Romana Nisar and mother-in-law Akhtri Begum and set on fire.

She was taken to a local hospital which referred her to the Pakistan Ordinance Factories Hospital in Wah with 90 per cent burn injuries. She died in the hospital. Ms Akhtar’s mother also suffered burn injuries while trying to save her. Ghazi police said the victim had also earlier written a letter to one of her relatives, informing him about threats by her in-laws.
