WhatsApp Disruption in Pakistan Attributed to Technical Glitch: PTA

Pakistan Press Foundation

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has attributed the ongoing WhatsApp disruptions in Pakistan to a technical glitch, addressing widespread concerns about the service interruptions. The issue has raised questions among users and prompted a parliamentary committee to seek answers.

Users across Pakistan began experiencing difficulties with WhatsApp on July 21, 2024. The disruptions included problems with sending and receiving messages, making voice and video calls, and accessing other features of the app. The PTA issued a statement explaining that the disruptions were due to a technical fault, not an intentional restriction or government action. This clarification came after users across the country reported difficulties in accessing and using the popular messaging app.

Syed Aminul Haque, chairman of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunications, questioned the Ministry of IT and Telecom officials regarding the disruption, but they redirected the inquiry to the PTA, the telecom sector regulator. Committee members noted that WhatsApp was functioning efficiently through VPNs, indicating that the disruptions were local rather than international.

Mr. Haque emphasized that any downgrading or suspension of public platforms must be communicated to the public to ward off any misconceptions or confusion about the country’s IT and telecom sector, and decided to summon PTA representatives to offer an explanation at their next meeting.

The PTA has assured the public that efforts are ongoing to resolve the technical issues and restore full functionality to WhatsApp. The authority emphasized its commitment to maintaining uninterrupted communication services and addressing any technical challenges promptly.
