Veteran journalist passes away

KARACHI, April 04 2005 : Veteran journalist Safdar Barlas died here of prostate cancer on Sunday evening. He was 78. Barlas, who worked in Dawn on many senior positions for over four decades, graduated from Lucknow University in 1947. He subsequently obtained a Master’s degree from Karachi University. Earlier, he had worked with Dawn for some time in Delhi.

He joined Habib Bank shortly after partition. While he worked with Agha Hasan Abidi some time at the bank, the lure of journalism brought him back to Dawn in early 1950s.

Barlas joined Dawn as sub-editor and rose to become city editor and assistant editor. He wrote editorials for some time and supervised the weekly magazine of the newspaper.
He leaves behind three sons, a daughter and wife.He was buried at Wadi Hussain graveyard on Super Highway after Isha prayers on Sunday.
