Veteran journalist joins hunger strike camp

KARACHI: Hamid Zubairi, 87, one of the founding members of the Karachi Union of journalists (KUJ) sat along with other journalists on hunger strike for a few hours on Thursday as the campaign calling for press freedom and attainment of the press workers’ rights entered its fourth day at the Karachi Press Club (KPC).

Hamid Zubairi wanted to sit for 24 hours’ hunger strike but on the request of the KUJ Action Committee he called off his strike after a few hours. The KUJ leaders thanked the veteran journalist for his support and presence at the hunger strike camp.

The four other journalists, who replaced the earlier batch on Thursday were Ali Rizvi (Dawn), Khalid Farshori (Akhbar-e-Jahan), Imtiaz Ali Chandio (Hilal-e-Pakistan) and Rana Khalid (Jang).

The stream of luminaries from various walks of life visiting the hunger strike camp continued. Those who visited the camp on Wednesday night and on Thursday included Jamat-e-Islami Secretary General Munawar Hasan, PPP Deputy

Secretary General ND Khan, MNA Ejaz Mahmood, of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), President Railway Workers Union Manzoor Razi, Allama Hasan Turabi of Tehreek Nifaz-e-Fiqah Jaferia and others.

All of them expressed complete solidarity with the hunger strike of the KUJ Action Committee and lauded their spirit of sacrifice.

Labour leaders, extending full support to KUJ, declared that if needed they would also join hunger strike.
