Verifying the number of missing persons difficult: HRCP
LAHORE: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) in a statement on Monday said there are difficulties in verifying the cases of disappearance in Balochistan and urged all concerned to play their role in documenting these cases.
The HRCP said disappearances still continue in Pakistan and the body was facing hurdles in documenting the same. While the nationalists claim the figure is in thousands, authorities say the number is in hundreds, which obviously is an understatement, the HRCP said. It said the number of verified cases were about 400 in 2007. It added the figures compiled by it were only those that had been verified.
It said sometimes errors occurred in figures received from various sources and sought cooperation of the families, civil society and all concerned for accuracy. The HRCP also called upon the government to redouble efforts to ensure that all those in illegal detention of government agencies were released without delay.
