Urdu journalism contributing towards unity

KARACHI – The Urdu language as well as the Urdu journalism is playing a cohesive role in the country and contributing towards national unity and provincial harmony.

This was stated by Karachi University (KU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui, while delivering presidential address at the inaugural session of the second national conference on Urdu journalism at the Shaikh Zayed Centre May 24.

The three-day moot is being held under the auspices of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Karachi.

Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali was invited to be the chief guest at the inaugural session of the conference but he could not come in view of his visit to Saudi Arabia.

The KU vice-chancellor also lauded the role of the Urdu press towards creation of awareness among the masses.

He, however, said the limited circulation of the newspapers in the country and pointed out that for every 1,000 people there are 20 copies of newspapers in Pakistan whereas the international standard is 100 copies.

The KU vice-chancellor informed that in Pakistan, 2,500 books are published every year as against 60,000 in India, In Pakistan, there are 92 radio sets for every 1,000 people whereas this number is 122 in India.
