Unesco vows to promote expression

Karachi, February 01,2005 :United Nations Educational Scientific & Cultural Organisation is fully committed to promoting freedom of expression throughout the world.
This was stated by Jocelyne Josiah, Unesco Regional Communication Adviser for Asia at concluding session of press freedom monitoring workshop organised by Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) in Karachi.

Ms. Josiah said those striving to safeguard human rights should also focus on radio to create awareness about basic rights among the people, especially those residing in remote rural areas.

She said radio was effective medium of communication with people living in villages and rural areas. She proposed present reach of radio be widened and such programs aired which help creating awareness among people of backward areas.

The three-day workshop was aimed at understanding legal basis of freedom of expression, constraints of expression in Pakistan and importance of monitoring press freedom.
The participants discussed matters of monitoring and investigating violation of freedom of expression, steps for effective action alerts to report press freedom violations and creating effective network for expression.

She said radio was most cost-effective and efficient medium of communication. In villages people listen to radio.Ms Josiah said effectiveness of radio facilities in the country be enhanced. She asked journalists and writers to play their rule for creating awareness among neglected sections of population. They should tell village people of their rights and how to utilize available state civic and legal facilities.
