UK journalists condemn Geo’s suspension

Pakistan Press Foundation

LONDON: Pakistan Journalists Association (PJA) UK has strongly condemned the suspension of Geo TV which is the country’s largest private broadcaster, and termed it a politically motivated attack on freedom of expression and the media.

PJA expressed its sadness on this cruel act by Pemra and said the suspension of Geo TV was a serious attack on press freedom in Pakistan.

“It is the latest act in an organised campaign of harassment and intimidation targeting the network on account of its perceived bias against the agencies,” said Wajahat Ali Khan, Secretary General Pakistan Journalists Association UK.

PJA demanded the Pakistani authorities must immediately reverse this ban. “If there are concerns about the content of Geo TV broadcasts, the authorities should address this in line with international human rights standards – not simply move to silence a critical voice”.

The governmental body Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) ruled that the licences of Geo TV be suspended for 15 days with immediate effect.
