Two Vani girls freed after police intervention

MIANWALI, April 18 2006: Two girls recently freed from the cruel custom of Vani were verbally divorced by their husbands on the condition that police would not take any action against their (Vani husbands’) families. After the appearing of a news item in the press, Khushab DPO Mian Javaid Islam directed Gunjial SHO Malik Dost Muhammad to take stern action against the girls’ parents for violating Section 310-A of the Pakistan Penal Code.

The SHO along with a heavy contingent of the Elite Force arrested the parents of the girls, the husbands and prayer leader Muhammad Esab and brought them to the Dera of landlord Malik Muhammad Yar Bandial, who was the head of the Punchayat that had settled the Vani matter.

After getting an assurance, blacksmith Ghulam Muhammad agreed to free the girls belonging to a cobbler family, while at the same time the husbands divorced the girls and released them. When contacted, the Khushab DPO said the main issue was to get the girls released, which had been done amicably. He was of the opinion that registering a case against the parents, the Imam and the Punchayat members would have complicated the issue instead of solving it.
