NEW YORK: Paying tributes to veteran journalist Dr Majid Nizami, speakers said that he fought for Pakistan and its ideology throughout his life.

They expressed these views at a meeting held on Wednesday to honour the memory of late Dr Majid Nizami. The meeting was organised by Tyeba Zia, a columnist for the Nawa-i-Waqt, in cooperation with the Pakistan Muslim League-N at the party’s office in Brooklyn, a borough of New York City.

Among those who participated were Pakistan’s Consul General in New York Raja Ali Ejaz, the President of PML-N, USA, Rohail Dar, Executive Director of Lahore-based Akhuwat Muhammad Amjad Saqib, and a number of US-based Pakistani journalists.

Opening the meeting, Tayeba Zia said that Nizami’s journalistic principles were a beacon of light for the Pakistani media community. She said she learnt from him the art of writing as did many others who worked the papers run by the Nawa-i-Waqt group.

“It is impossible to fill the void left by him,” she added.

Consul General Ejaz said his passing away was great loss to the country. He expressed his condolences to Nizami’s family and the men and women who worked for his media group. The journalists in the gathering spoke about Nizami’s qualities of head and heat and said he was not just an editor but an institution.

They said Nizami was an outspoken journalist and a patriot who held strong views on Kashmir, the nuclear issue and the two-nation theory. It was pointed out that he was also great promoter of democracy. Later, special prayer was offered for the soul of Nizami.
