QUETTA: Five people, including three personnel of the security forces, were killed and several others were injured in a powerful bomb explosion in Shahbaz Town here on Wednesday.

Police have confirmed the number of deaths and said that three security personnel were among those killed in the blast. Due to the strike of doctors in the government and private hospitals of Quetta, nearly all the injured were shifted to the CMH for medical treatment.

Reports suggested that the bomb was attached to a motorbike which was parked near the main road in Shahbaz Town. As soon as the vehicle of security forces reached there, the explosive device went off with a big bang followed by intense firing. Initial investigations suggested that the blast was caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attached to a motorcycle, CCPO Quetta Mir Zubair, while talking to newsmen on the spot, said.

The thud of the explosion was heard several kilometres away. Panic gripped the area as aerial firing started after the blast. Due to the explosion, nearby buildings and vehicles in the area were also damaged. Apparently, the blast targeted a security forces’ vehicle, sources added.

Officials of the police, FC and administration reached the spot and cordoned off the area as officials of the bomb disposal squad examined the site of the blast. They later said 15 kilograms of high explosive material was used in the explosion.

The deceased were identified as Naik Iatbar, Sepoy Shahbaz, Sepoy Imtiaz and two others whose names are yet to be confirmed. Twenty-one people, who were injured in the blast, were shifted to the CMH in private vehicles and ambulances.
