Three Japanese among 4 killed in accident near Gilgit

ISLAMABAD- Three Japanese television journalists and their Pakistani driver were killed on October 24, 2002 after their vehicle plunged into a ditch near Gilgit, police said. The Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) journalists and the driver died when their vehicle went out of control on the Karakoram Highway, linking Islamabad with Gilgit, they said. The victims had been en route to Islamabad, a police official said, when they crashed about 80 km from Gilgit, near the town of Chilas, at about 3:30 pm. Police in Gilgit said the four had decided to drive after failing to get a flight to Islamabad. Police said it would take time to determine the victims’ names because of the remoteness of the area and its lack of communications.
