Threats hurled at journalists condemned

Karachi:The Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) has taken strong exception to threats hurled against media persons by leaders of political parties and other ‘pressure groups’, over not reporting in conformity with their liking and aspiration.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the KUJ vowed to jealously guard the freedom of the press and security of journalists.

The KUJ reminds the political leaders that instead of encouraging people to take the law into their own hands and break the limbs of those whose reports are not considered favourable to them, they should resort to legal remedies.

“The KUJ is also shocked that the entire profession of journalism has been equated with prostitution, which is not only abhorring but also unacceptable,” it said.

The KUJ maintained that if any harm was done to the journalists, their organisations and their family members, those who hurled such a threat would be held responsible.

“We hope that the government will fulfil its constitutional and moral responsibilities in case of any such illegal act,” it said.

The KUJ assures all the political parties, including those in the ruling coalition, that it will keep fulfilling professional journalistic responsibilities without any bias. It also appeals to the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) and concerned quarters and IFJ to take serious note of the threats.
