Threat to journalists

Sir: Freedom of speech is one of the greatest merits of democracy. However, the bitter reality is that Pakistan is on the top of the list of the countries that are dangerous for journalists. Many journalists fail to perform their duties honestly because they work under threats from both ends — intelligence agencies and militant groups. They cannot go to the no-go areas of Balochistan, FATA, Karachi and other tribal areas to collect data based on facts. This is one of the reasons why since 1999, 39 journalists have lost their lives.
As a student of Mass Communications in Karachi I have read that media is the fourth estate. If that is correct then I would love to ask the concerned authorities wherein lies the power of media?
