The Progressive panel sweeps KUJ faction polls

KARACHI: The Progressive panel swept the annual election of a faction of the Karachi Union of Journalists on Saturday.

According to official results announced by Chief Election Commissioner Hasan Imam Siddiqui, Ashraf Khan of The Progressive panel won the election for the office of president as he polled 316 ballots against Tahir Hasan Khan of The Democrat panel, who got only 23 votes.

Ahmed Khan Malik of The Progressive panel won the election for post of general secretary after bagging 313 votes. His opponent, Khurshid Abbasi of The Democrat panel, secured 18 votes.

Qazi Asif and Naeem Khokhar polled 287 and 263 votes, respectively, and became vice presidents of the union. Their rivals Syed Athar Hussain and Arbab Chandio could only get 22 and 29 votes, respectively. M. Javed Qureshi was elected as treasurer (295 votes) and Liaquat Ali Raza (297) and Qaseem Saeed (268) became joint secretaries.

Asif Shaikh, Aslam Shah, Ghulam Qadir Zia, Ibrahim Sualeh, Nadra Mushtaq, Shankar Lal and Younus Afridi were elected as members of the KUJ’s executive council.
